Looking after that vinyl collection is important and ensures you get the best sound when played. Handle them by the edges, store them vertically in a cool, dry, and dark place, and use anti-static inner and outer sleeves. Before each play, use a carbon fibre brush to remove dust. For deeper cleaning, use a specialised cleaning solution and microfiber cloths as needed.

Handling

  • Touch with care: Hold records by the edges and the centre label to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your fingers to the surface.

  • Handle gently: When removing a record from its sleeve, tilt the sleeve and let the record slide out gently.

Storage

  • Store upright: Keep records in a vertical position, like books on a shelf, to prevent warping and ring wear.

  • Keep cool and dry:

  • Store them in a cool, dry place, ideally between 18-21 °C (65-70°F), away from direct sunlight and heat sources, such as radiators.

  • Avoid tight packing: Do not pack shelves too tightly, as this can cause pressure and damage.

  • Use sleeves: Always use an inner sleeve (preferably anti-static) and a protective outer sleeve to guard against dust and scratches.

Cleaning

  • Remove dust: Before playing, use a carbon fibre brush to gently clean the record by holding it on the spinning surface for a few rotations.

  • Perform a wet clean: For a deeper clean, use a dedicated vinyl cleaning solution or a solution of distilled water with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol.

  • Clean with a microfiber cloth: Apply the solution to the record (avoiding the label) and wipe gently in a circular motion with a clean microfiber cloth, following the grooves.

  • Invest in a machine: For the best results, consider using a record cleaning machine, especially for heavily soiled records.

  • Clean the stylus: Regularly clean your turntable's stylus with a dry brush to maintain optimal playback quality and prolong the life of both the record and the stylus.
